Alicia Hendrick, VACMA 2021/22, Creative Mapping Session with Dr Michael Pierre Johnson, Illumination 2020/2022, and Colmcille Legacy Award 2022 Tobermory, Isle of Mull (and Iona residency)
Alicia is an island-based artist who has received CHARTS support for a variety of works. VACMA (2021) provided a printing press allowing Alicia to work in her studio at Bank House, Tobermory, as opposed to travelling to Edinburgh Printmakers. Alicia has been able to utilise this freed-up time to experiment and develop a new body of work and develop an installation work (Autumn 2022).
The Colmcille Legacy Award supported Alicia on a residency to Iona where she created work with Gaelic language, supported by Alasdair Whyte. As a result of working with Alasdair, Alicia has been the first visual artist to be invited to publish a blog on the Iona Placenames project’s website, a three-year project funded by AHRC, in Celtic & Gaelic at the University of Glasgow. VACMA (2022) is supporting Alicia in the expansion of her residency work.
VACMA and CHARTS supported Alicia to create a more sustainable practice by reducing her need to travel and dependence on mainland artist institutions, helping to strengthen the local art facilities. VACMA support allowed Alicia to strategically focus her time and create new networks with people such as Alasdair Whyte and other island artists. These networks were strengthened through CHARTS’ Creative Mapping session, which connected creativity across the geographical region digitally during the pandemic. Through the variety of support, Alicia was able to create new bodies of work and networks, which allowed her to receive additional funding and participate in new projects.
