Argyll Estates Archives, Inveraray Castle

Organisation

Inveraray

Argyll Estates Archives are the archive of the Campbell family, Dukes of Argyll. Dating from the 12th century, the collection reflects the important political roles held by the Earls and Dukes through the centuries and the breadth of the estates they managed throughout Argyll and Bute. Described as 'one of the most important private archives in Scotland' by Professor Allan MacInnes, Argyll Estates Archives provide an incredibly rich resource to support the history and heritage of the area.
The archive collection includes historical evidence for communities throughout Argyllshire (including Dumbarton, Cowal, Kintyre, Oban, Mull and Tiree as well as Inveraray), providing the stories of past people, places, local and national events. As well as supporting the preservation and management of the collection, we use the archives to support outreach projects which enhance knowledge and understanding of national and local history and to inspire and support creative work.
Additionally, we provide volunteering opportunities for young and old, enabling people to learn about and contribute to the preservation of history in a warm and friendly environment alongside people with similar interests.
