The next presentation in the Friends of the Argyll Papers seminar series 2021/22, willl take place on Friday 21 Jan 2022 at 15:00 GMT when Iain Connon will be talking about ‘Colintraive and the Campbells of Southhall’.

Iain will give an overview of the six Campbell lairds of Southhall - six diverse lives spanning a couple of hundred years in half an hour – telling a few stories about each of the lairds and their impact on the life of the community here. To set the context, Iain will show where Colintraive is and why it got its name and, starting in 1685, note the impact of the Argyll Rebellion both on the community here and the demise of the Ellengreg Campbells who sold their land to Peter Campbell at the beginning of the 18th Century.

The seminar will be given on Zoom.

Attendance at the seminar is free to members of the Friends. Non-members are asked to make a £5 donation to the Friends at Donate to Friends of the Argyll Papers (enthuse.com).

Everyone who wishes to attend needs to book a place for the seminar via eventbrite at: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/colintraive-and-the-campbells-of-southhall-tickets-245720044267 or by emailing Alison at: friendsoftheargyllpapers@gmail.com

Iain Connon’s wife’s family have lived in or around Colintraive for at least a couple hundred years and Eileen has cousins everywhere! Iain’s connections are from the 1960s, in Colintraive and on Bute.  He has worked as a guide at Mount Stuart for 10 or more years and has been involved in the creation of the Colintraive Heritage Centre – which will be opening again in Spring after the lockdown.  He also has a good overview of Scottish history by dint of reading quite a lot. Iain is keen to acknowledge the work that Diarmid Campbell has and is doing in transcribing and cataloguing the Southhall papers which are in the archive at Inveraray Castle.
