Sarah Rosenthal-Almirall

Individual

Sarah Rosenthal-Almirall of Ardbeag Crafts weaves new life into ancient textile arts, from stunning replica Viking-era vararfeldir to luxurious raw wool rugs that bring a sense of the wild Highlands to homes around the world.

Each piece is handmade in a 300-year-old farm cottage, perched on the edge of the Gare Loch. Sarah is inspired by the beautiful vistas that can be seen from her loom, and by the rich textile history that has long touched the Southern Highlands.

Her sustainably-sourced and handwoven textiles are truly one-of-a-kind, each as wild and rugged as the woods and mountains on her doorstep. They are steeped in her studies of Scotland's ancient weavers, from Viking cloaks woven on a replica warp-weighted loom, to chunky woollen rugs that could have graced an 18th-century croft.

Passionate about sustainable fibre crafts and historical weaving techniques, Sarah shares this passion via touring textiles exhibitions across Scotland and beyond. Her exhibitions include the Forgotten Fleece Tales touring exhibition in partnership with Creation Mill CIC, and the Vararfeldr touring exhibition.
