Jessie Dundas

Gaelic

Tha Jessie Dundas na neach-ealain a theagaisg i fhèin agus a tha an obair aice fo bhuaidh mhòr aig cànan is feallsanachd na Gàidhlig. Ged a chaidh a togail gun Ghàidhlig, bha a h-òige air a bogadh ann an dualchas na Gàidhlig, le màthair a h-athar na neach-dùthchais às na Hearadh. O chionn ghoirid, tha Jessie air a bhith ag ath-shealbhachadh a’ chànain, a tha air atharrachadh mòr a thoirt air an obair chruthachail aice. Tha an obair aice a’ rannsachadh chuspairean Gàidhlig leithid toradh agus co-choisiche (ainm a tha a’ gabhail air na h-aislingean aice), gan toirt a-steach anns an ealain aice. Bidh i a’ feuchainn ri mar a tha seanchas is cruthachalachd na Gàidhlig air riochd a chur air an ealain aice a thuigsinn.

“Tha a bhith a’ ceangal ri cànan is cultar na Gàidhlig tron ealain air a bhith na fhuasgladh is na leigheas dhomh. Tha e air leigeil leam gabhail a-mach à crìochan cumhang ealain na Beurla agus cànan a bheir dealbh air an obair a bhios mi a’ dèanamh a thuigsinn.” – Jessie Dundas

English

Jessie Dundas is a self-taught artist whose work is deeply influenced by Gaelic culture and philosophy. Although she grew up without the Gaelic language, her childhood was rooted in Gaelic traditions, with her father's mother being a native Gaelic speaker from Harris. Recently, Jessie has been reclaiming the language, which has transformed her creative process. Her work explores Gaelic concepts like toradh (the life or produce of a living thing) and co-choisiche (a label for her visionary experiences), merging them with her artistic practice. She seeks to understand how Gaelic storytelling and creativity shape her art.

“Engaging with Gaelic language and culture through art has been a liberating and healing process for me. It's allowed me to step out of the narrow boundaries of anglocentric art and find the language which helps describe the work I make.” - Jessie Dundas
