Alice Stillman

Gaelic

Tha Alice Stillman na neach-ealain agus tha an obair chruthachail aice a-mach air cuspairean leithid cur à àite is call, air a brosnachadh leis na chunnaic i gu h-òg agus na dùbhlain a th’ ann an-dràsta a thaobh bith-eugsamhlachd is eugsamhlachd chultarail. Air a h-àrach ann an coimhearsnachd dhlùth, bidh Alice a-nis a’ rannsachadh nan raointean seo tro ealain le ceanglaichean sòisealta. Thog am pròiseact aice tree + cake ann am Muile ceistean cudromach mu ion-ghabhaltachd is mu chom-pàirteachadh, gu sònraichte le daoine le dùthchas Gàidhlig. Thàinig à seo Feàrna, coimisean ris an do chuir CHARTS taic, rannsachadh co-obrachail air dòighean ion-ghabhaltach gus a bhith ag obair le coimhearsnachdan is cultar Gàidhlig.

“’S e neach-ealain le ceanglaichean sòisealta a bhuineas do dhùthchas na Beurla a th’ annam agus a tha stèidhichte is ag obair sa Ghàidhealtachd. ’S e a bhith a’ ceangal ri Gàidheil, agus ri cultar is cànan na Gàidhlig an dòigh a th’ agam gus an t-àite far a bheil mi a’ fuireach a-nis agus an t-àite a th’ agam ann a thuigsinn. Bidh e gam chuideachadh gus luach is neart a’ chultair chugallaich seo fhaicinn agus le sin a bhith a’ fuireach is ag obair le barrachd mothachaidh is aire ann an suidheachadh toinnte.” – Alice Stillman

English

Alice Stillman is an artist whose creative practice responds to themes of displacement and loss, inspired by her early childhood experiences and the current challenges faced by biodiversity and cultural diversity. Raised in a close-knit family community, Alice now explores these themes through socially engaged art. Her project tree + cake in Mull raised important questions about inclusion and participation, particularly with people of Gaelic heritage. This led to the Feàrna, a CHARTS supported commission, a collaborative exploration of inclusive ways of working with Gaelic communities and culture.

“I am a socially engaged artist of English heritage based and practising in the Ghàidhealtachd. Engaging with people of Gaelic heritage, Gaelic culture, and the Gaelic language is my way of understanding the place where I now live and how I fit into it. It helps me see the value and resilience of this fragile culture and thus live and practice more sensitively and carefully within a complex context.” -  Alice Stillman
