Gaelic

Tha Abbie Lois Cartmell ri sgead-dhealbhachd, clò agus sgeulachdan agus tha an obair aice a’ tarraing gu domhainn bho aithris-bheòil na h-Alba is na h-Èireann. Ged nach deach a togail le Gàidhlig, tha Abbie air i fhìn a bhogadh sna sgeulachdan dùthchasach seo agus tha i ag ionnsachadh a’ chànain gu gnìomhach gus cur ris an tuigse a th’ aice air an suidheachadh shaidhbhir chultarail dham buin iad. Tro phriontadh-sgrìn, tha i a’ toirt beatha do sgeulachdan nam ban, a’ cur ris a’ ghuth is ris an dìleab aca. Le còrr is ceithir bliadhna air a chur seachad aice a’ teagasg, tha Abbie a’ stiùireadh chlasaichean ann an dèanamh clò ann an caochladh shuidheachaidhean is bhuidhnean-aoise, agus tha i air muinntireas-ealain a threòrachadh ann an Cìopras. Tha an t-eòlas a tha i a’ cur air a’ Ghàidhlig a’ saidhbhreachadh a cuid obair chruthachail gu domhainn a-nis, ga ceangal nas doimhne ris an dualchas a tha a’ brosnachadh a cuid obrach.

English

Abbie Lois Cartmell is an illustrator, printmaker, and storyteller whose practice draws deeply from Scottish and Irish folklore. Although she didn’t grow up with Gaelic, Abbie has immersed herself in these traditional stories and is actively learning the language to enhance her understanding of their rich cultural context. Through screen printing, she brings to life the stories of women, amplifying their voices and legacies. With over four years of teaching experience, Abbie leads printmaking classes across diverse settings and age groups, and has facilitated artist residencies in Cyprus. Her growing Gaelic knowledge is now profoundly enriching her creative process, connecting her more deeply to the traditions that inspire her work.

“I want to learn the stories of our past through a language which was shaped by our landscape.” Abbie Lois Cartmell
