Guthan Nàdair

Guthan Nàdair, the premiere for Gregor Sinclair and Lisa Robertson's BEURA took place in the Rockfield Centre in Oban on Saturday 3rd October, with the venue's ground floor events room packed out with over 50  people in attendance.  The film, shot entirely in black and white and scored by a live 4-piece orchestra, was a hit with everyone present, narrated by Ealasaid Dhomhnallach, the last fluent speaker of the Morvern Gaelic dialect.

The Cailleach Bheur, in whose honour the film is titled, is voiced by Ealasaid, and discusses the radically changing environmental circumstances over the centuries from the mythical creation of the world in the Coire Bhreacain whirlpool to the modern age of climate change. The elegant Gaelic voice of Ealasaid, along with Gregor’s dramatic, stark cinematography, provided the backdrop for the orchestra to augment the experience with both poignant and, at times, unsettling stylings which coaxed the story along.

The film was followed by further sublime musical contributions from Ailie Robertson, Wildwood Cello Duo and Cailean Jennet and was attended by several Gaelic speakers. CHARTS Àdhamh Ó Broin and daughter Saorsa offered an off-the-cuff Argyll Gaelic song at the break, during which Gregor told a story from his native Orkney.  A tremendous opening night for a superb short film which will make waves as it travels around Scotland and beyond.

BEURA will be screening in Glasgow on 14th October 2026 as part of Mòd Nàiseanta Rìoghail Ghlaschu and Kendal 20 November as part of the Kendal Mountain Festival.
