Finding Achalander or Auchanrear

David Alexander recently got in touch with CHARTS looking for a map showing Achalander or Auchanrear. If any of our members can help David in his quest please let him know. Many thanks!

I am currently researching the family tree of a friend.  One set of his great great grandparents were Donald Sinclair and Margaret Christie who were married in 1834 – Donald’s banns recorded in Glenorchy and Margaret’s in Killin.  Their first 2 children were born in Killin in 1836 and 1837.  From 1838 to 1849 a further 8 children were born in Glenorchy – the 1841 Census records the family at Achalander in Glenorchy.

The last born of the family was Hugh Sinclair, my friend’s grandfather, born in 1852 in Ardchattan.  Hugh studied at Glasgow University between 1870 and 1876 and then attended Andersons College (Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow) where he was awarded a Licentiate of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons and a Licentiate in Midwifery in 1883.  Thereafter he became a doctor in the Royal Infirmary Glasgow (1883 to 1885), then Doctor at Inverary Jail (1886 – 1889) and finally Doctor in Millport, Cumbrae (from 1889 on).  He met his wife Janet Scott at Inverary where her father, Robert, was the hotel keeper at the George Hotel there.

The family are recorded from the 1851 Census until Donald’s death in 1873 at Auchanrear or Achinnear in Ardchattan.

To date I have been unable to find a map showing the location of either Achalander in Glenorchy or Auchanrear in Ardchattan.  It would be great if any of your readers could identify these sites for me.
