Beura is a new Gaelic arts project which brings together the music of a celebrated Highland composer and the visuals of an Orcadian filmmaker. Beura, which is a retelling of traditional Gaelic folklore through a modern environmental lens, was filmed by Gregor D. Sinclair and composed by Lisa Robertson.
The piece, which is produced in partnership with Creative Scotland and Tobar an Dualchais, draws on stories surrounding the mythical Cailleach Bheur, the Celtic goddess of nature, storms and winter, dating back to the 9th century. Beura reframes these old stories as a prescient parable for climate change and environmental destruction, as well as the loss of the Gaelic language.
Filmmaker Gregor D. Sinclair said:
“The sublime and powerful landscapes of the Gàidhealtachd are renowned across the world. But today they face the twin crises of environmental collapse and the disappearance of Gàidhlig language and culture. The natural cycles of reciprocity that existed between the people and the earth for centuries are being pulled apart by wider forces. Through this piece, we want to show how it is only by looking to our past that we can ultimately hope to save our future.”
Composer Lisa Robertson said:
“Through the script, visuals and music in Beura, we wanted to capture the powerful feminine presence in the landscape so evident in traditional stories of A' Chailleach Bheur. Through her perspective, we portray today's threats to both the environment and to Gaelic traditions. As well as environmental influences, traditional songs relating to A' Chailleach Bheur found on Tobar an Dualchais formed the basis of the music. We enjoyed shaping the script and use of language around different iterations of the tale, particularly those local to Argyll.”

Get your ticket for Guthan Nàdair, an evening event featuring the premiere of Beura alongside Ailie Robertson's Echoes of Torloisk and new pieces by Wildwood Cello Duo and Cailean Jennett, takes place at the Rockfield Centre, Oban, at 7pm on 3 October, as part of the 2026 Mòd Fringe Festival.
