The Isle of Luing Community Trust is the community development charity for Luing, a small island 16 miles south of Oban with a population of about 170. Islanders pay more for essential fuel and transport and there are challenges around affordable housing and employment opportunities on island and also off island hampered by the ferry timetable. The Trust gained funding to build the Atlantic Islands Centre which provides economic employment for islanders as well as volunteering opportunities. It operates as a community centre and a tourist attraction with exhibitions and archives of Luing's heritage collated by Luing History Group as well as other art and crafts exhibitions. There are many artists and crafters on the island and a thriving group meets regularly to share and learn together, with additional workshops run by skilled experts from on and off island. The popular cafe features local Taste of Luing foods and the small retail shop sells the work of over 20 local artists and crafters, as well as a good selection of books. The Trust is developing a small-scale slate project which would see the opening of a small quarry to provide hand-trimmed west highland slate for renovation projects around Scotland as well as slate for crafting which would create year-round skilled island jobs. The key island asset is the highly motivated community who support each other and island projects for the benefit of everyone and have done so for many years.
