The Scottish Ruralists
Posted by Dunoon Burgh Hall
The founding members, Jim Davis, John Archbold and Don McNeil held an open air exhibition at Traigh Beach in the early 90’s – Jim wrote above the van:- “Freshly caught paintings for sale” and Don added:- ‘By the Scottish Ruralists” and that was the birth of the group. The next time they met two new artists joined them, Glen Neil and the late Euan Douglas (Dougie), and galleries throughout Scotland were keen to give them an exhibition.
All are Glasgow School of Art students graduating in Drawing and Painting when everyone was taught to see through drawing and how to apply paint in the tradition of the Scottish Colourists and Joan Eardley.
