Stories:

Exhibition of Art by Pete Leckie

Stories are everywhere, shaping our lives. Some shake the walls of cities; others bring comfort and understanding. They are comfortable in their context but often not content.

I love telling stories, and even more, I love hearing them. It’s why I enjoy helping out at various things—I absorb the stories, and I’m enriched by the shared experience of hearing them re-told. With friends, I’ve laughed, cried, and been amazed, all in moments that I deeply value.

Storytelling is one of the defining traits of humanity, and on these islands, it’s one of our greatest skills. I believe it’s the most important part of our culture. Stories help us make sense of the world, teach, inspire, and share our emotions. Islay, where I live, is full of stories—whether it’s a ruined croft or a tourist seeking ancient megaliths among sheep, there’s always a tale waiting to be told. It’s in this setting that I do my work.

I’ve been creating art since 2013, using painting, drawing, and mixed media collages to explore stories that interest me. This October, from the 7th to November 8th, I’ll be exhibiting my latest work at Ionad Chaluim Chille Ìle. You’re all welcome to come see my work, which spans from 2017 to now. Much of it is on found wood, whose texture adds a unique character and influence to each piece. Every artwork in the exhibition links to a story, whether myth, legend, or something personal to me.

For me, creating art is an exercise in patience and control. Diagnosed with dyspraxia at 13, which affects my coordination, working with a paintbrush was (and still is) outside my comfort zone. Yet each time I create, I feel calmer and more connected.

Come by, and feel free to share your thoughts and stories.
