This session brings together three different examples of museums and galleries working in place-based ways.

Exploring these examples will allow attendees to further appreciate various practical ways that museums take a place-based approach to their work and impact.

Join MGS to hear from:

Stuart J Thompson MBE, Chairman of Annan Riding of the Marches, who will discuss how the local museum has supported his work with a unique form of Intangible Cultural Heritage and how this partnership has had positive social and economic impacts in the town and wider region.

Robert Hay , Trustee of Lismore Gaelic Heritage Centre. The heritage centre is an important resource for both islanders and visitors as one of the only publicly accessible spaces on the island of Lismore. It provides an essential social and economic resource for Lismore communities. The museum actively supports the use of Gaelic as a living community language, and is important to the safeguarding of Lismore Gaelic as a living language. Robert will examine the inevitable place work resulting from the museum’s role in its community.

Stella Hook is Engagement Lead in the Archives and Collections Team at Glasgow School of Art “GSA” and has been instrumental in devising and delivering their programme of community engagement. The GSA Museum space, Windows on Heritage, is a valuable community asset for the local area.
