You are invited to join lichen enthusiasts, Stuart Gibson and Steve Littlewood for a day discovering more than you thought about the biology and ecology of these amazing and fascinating jewels in Mull’s natural history crown. Suitable for beginners or refreshers.

Where? The day, divided into two parts, is based in Tobermory. Session1: at Aros Park (09.45 - 12 noon); Session 2 on the Rubha nan Gall lighthouse path (13.30- 15.30).

Meet at main car park in the centre of Aros Park for 09.45 start. Bring a packed lunch to be taken in the park (or go home if you live nearby but you’ll miss the free cake) before moving on to Session 2 at the start of the Rubha nan Gall lighthouse path, near the CalMac jetty. Those attending the afternoon session only should join us at the entrance to Cafe Fish at 13.30hrs.

Each session will explore different themes and species from the outstanding lichen communities found on the island. Participants can look forward to coming into contact with a range of common and more unusual lichens at both venues, in a way that will help you identify them as well as understand their importance to the ecosystems they live in.

Ideally, participants will benefit from and book for both sessions, but it is possible to attend only one, space permitting.

What to bring? A moderate level of fitness is required, but walking is pretty gentle. Most will be on level ground, although there is a stepped incline at the afternoon’s venue. Both venues can be a bit muddy, so appropriate boots are advisable. It’s Mull - come dressed for the weather! Pocket magnifying glasses will be provided but by all means bring your own. Optionally, you may also like to bring a camera and notebook.

Cost? This event is FREE, as part of our own #Givingsomethingback project.

Booking Information: Places will be limited to 12 people per session and priority will be given to those wanting to attend both sessions. To book or for further information, please email Steve at steve.littlewood@btinternet.com or text on 07748252425

In the event of a bad weather forecast the event may be postponed or cancelled Any notice of cancellation will be posted on the Mull Scenery, Flora, Fauna and Fungi Facebook page.
