Skipness Festival of Light
Celebrating community through art, legend and song.

Come and co-create an art installation to be placed on Skipness Beach at Imbolc 2026.

We aim to build hundreds of ships, made from driftwood, old spinnaker sails and flotsam.  The sails will carry images of the hopes and dreams of the future. These ships will be arranged on the beach in the shape of a single ship and lit by solar lights.  

This art installation will then be confronted by the legendary shapeshifter sea monster Cirein Croin that will dance around the boats to scare away any fears of the future.  

Cirein Croin is a huge puppet moved by up to 8 people.

At each workshop, you’ll make a boat, design a sail with your hopes and dreams all the while learning and singing a Gaelic herring song… the lyrics of which describe the meal of the legendary sea monster Cirein Croin!

Workshops also include a story telling of the legend of the Cirein Croin.

After the exhibition, you can take your ship home and we’ll give you a solar light for your sculpture.
