Chariots

CHARIOTS is an exhibition of oil paintings and drawings. It is a lyrical story of how childhood street games overlap with archetypal myths which enrich our lives.
The works spring from my memory of the small carts made out of wooden fishing boxes in my childhood community. These carts were made and operated by local young boys who, on finding fish boxes washed up on the shore, would fix them one on top of another. Adding pram wheels underneath, and some spidery forward wheels for steering, these chariots provided hours of fun.
Helios is said to have driven his chariot carrying the sun across the sky every day from dawn to dusk. Thor drove a chariot drawn by goats. Hades’ chariotwas black, Aphrodite’s was golden. Zeus, Demetre, Artemis, Dionysus and many more all had their chariot. In Irish mythology also, the abductor of the children of Lir is said to have “got her chariot yoked” in be order to steal the children of Lir.
