"Banners 4 Justice" a solo exhibition by London poet/artist Astra Papachristodoulou

Protest banners, more so than common sculptural poems, pose questions around brevity, instantaneity, and the present moment – they do not merely exist in exhibition catalogues, anthologies, and gallery spaces (although they can also do that) but they also exist on the streets. Astra Papachristodoulou’s Banners for Justice exhibition at DUNOON MOCA presents a series of banner poems, as she calls them, that brings together text and found materials (from jute to ribbons and felt). The show marks Papachristodoulou’s second solo exhibition following her debut solo exhibition at the Southbank Centre in London that was concluded earlier this year. Banners for Justice showcases a form of tactile poetry that tackles social and ecological issues, while it also challenges our perception of what poetry can be. This is the kind of poetry that serves a function, not in a consumerist sense, but in a sensorial, entangled sense. Banners for Justice opens on September 6th in a public reception (2pm – 5pm) and will run until September 28th at DUNOON MOCA - all are welcome.
