http://Www.mrlc.shopNkem Okwechime (he/him) is a British-Nigerian artist and printmaker based in Glasgow.
Born in South London and raised in Dundee, his work explores the intersections of identity,
colonial history, and diasporic heritage through screen printing, photography, and
lithography. Drawing on his mixed Scottish and Nigerian background, Okwechime’s practice
reclaims and reimagines cultural symbols—often through layered visual storytelling that
blends African iconography with everyday British life.
He graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 2022 with a First-Class Honours degree in
Painting and Printmaking, receiving the Glasgow Print Studio Prize. His recent solo projects
include the One Shilling series, which reappropriates colonial postage stamps from Southern
Nigeria as a critique of empire and a celebration of cultural resistance. In 2024, he was
commissioned by the new Perth Museum to create a commemorative banner honouring
Joseph Knight—the first man in Scotland to legally win his freedom from enslavement in
1778.
Okwechime’s work has been exhibited at Generator Projects, Gallery Fresco (Lagos), The
Alchemy Experiment, the Perth Museum, and Glasgow Print Studio. He also runs M.R.L.C., a
clothing and print initiative combining street culture with visual commentary.
Blending fine art techniques with personal narrative and political urgency, his work acts as
both celebration and critique—amplifying diasporic voices while engaging critically with the
legacies of empire embedded in contemporary Scottish culture.
