Donna Betts

Donna Betts, PhD, ATR-BC, FSAScot, is a Board Certified art therapist and a Society of Antiquaries of Scotland Fellow. Driven by a passion for the arts, cultural heritage and the historic environment, Dr. Betts promotes applications of the arts in improving health, well-being, and quality of life through various advisory roles and collaborative projects. Her most recent book publication, Bridging the Creative Arts Therapies and Arts in Health: Toward Inspirational Practice, examines topics related to policy, funding and international initiatives geared to improving mental health, wellbeing and quality of life through the arts. During the summer of 2011, Dr. Betts led An Art Therapy Study of Visitor Reactions to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Experience (https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/09647775.2015.1008388). Her interest in art-based methods and her own Scottish Gaelic heritage extended into a longitudinal collaborative study based in Nova Scotia, Canada (2012 – 2013), Ìle ga Bruidhinn: Community-Based Gaelic Language Revitalization. Expanding upon this interest, Dr. Betts is presently pursuing a Master of Letters degree in Scottish Heritage at the University of Aberdeen. Throughout her career, Dr. Betts has maintained a commitment to collaboration through arts advocacy efforts and continues to promote arts in health through involvement with various organizations working to increase access to the arts. She originally hails from Toronto and presently resides in the Niagara region of Ontario, Canada, and enjoys frequent visits to Scotland.
